In my own practice, I am very interested in finding balances between figuration and abstraction. This is something you have been investigating for awhile now with your portrait-esque works. How do approach this balance?

It’s simple really. I make something that looks like a portrait but has no likeness. They are small and done very fast, but they are also goopy and thick…a portrait of paint. Then I spend weeks enlarging every aspect of it, and make it maybe 9 feet tall. So it becomes about scale too, a big painting that feels very small. The carpet thing was about walking on a sketch…of a disfigured Spanish king, but It was about being in it.

After hearing about Colin Beavan and his family project a while back, I finally got to see his inspiring movie, No Impact Man last night at a screening hosted by the Materials For The Arts. If you have yet to hear about the Beavan’s or see the film, the basic premise is about the nyc family of three who try to have “no impact” on the environment for a full year by attempting to produce no waste, buying only local unpackaged food, not using electricity, walking/biking everywhere, removing all toxic products from there home, and go as off the grid as possible in an urban setting. I strongly recommend viewing it…even for the most environmentally conscious, it is an inspiring reminder of just how disconnected we can be to our effects on the world and some small things we can each do to use less.

I like this city. The sunset is pretty great. Especially when you watch it beside the river or on the street, you could feel the warm touch of the sunshine. That’s why Many stores don’t turn on their light in the afternoon. they use the sunshine. The weird thing is, they close the door at 5 p.m. However i move to Sukhothai tomorrow(actually it’s today)
